"Most of the classic stories of gold-lust have ended with the loss of the gold, as it blows away to dust. EUREKA is different. The hero keeps the gold, but he gets blown away to dust. A man who has everything, Jack McCann, loses his head. It is Roeg's CITIZEN KANE, with Eureka as Xanadu, and a hero with his own Rosebud (in this case, a Philosopher's Stone that falls when he dies) and even a cockatoo. But McCann is not William Randolph Hearst: he is more like Orson Welles. When you have achieved your dream, your ultimate, your ecstasy, what do you do with the rest of your life? You experience a spiritual death. You die twice, which makes you hard to kill at the end, because you have been there before" (Neil Sinyard).
